Introduction

The purpose of this unit is to introduce the intrinsic risk factors for falling and consequences of falls in the elderly.

Objectives

At the end of this unit, the learner should be able to:

  • Differentiate between intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for falling.
  • Describe the intrinsic risk factors for falling.
  • Discuss the consequences of falls in the aging population.

Unit 2: Postural Control in Aging Adults

Introduction

The purpose of this unit is to describe postural responses of healthy older adults and the changes in postural control associated with aging.

Objectives

At the end of this unit, the learner should be able to:

  • Define postural control.
  • Describe factors affecting postural control in healthy adults.
  • Discuss changes in postural control that occur with aging.

Unit 3: Examination/Evaluation of Older Adults with Balance Impairment

Introduction

Describes the examination/evaluation process of an older adult at risk for loss of balance and falling.

Objectives

At the end of this unit, the learner should be able to:

  • Systematically gather past and current information from the patient/client, family, and caregivers that may provide medical and social history related to falls risk.
  • Conduct a review of systems to screen for potential intrinsic risk factors associated with falling.
